Our logs are cut to length and split as soon as possible after felling before being stacked to
ensure rapid and reliable seasoning. Samples are taken regularly to measure and
record the drying process.
All logs are stored under roofed shelter with plenty of ventilation.
Firewood is usually sold by volume rather than by weight – wet wood weighing heavier than dry.
When logs are split and loaded into a trailer, air space accounts for 50% of the volume.
Loads are usually expressed as loose volume. Our smallest load is 0.6 cubic metres; the largest is 1.8 cubic metres loose. Our logs are available in two lengths:
Long Logs = 35cm/14″ Short Logs = 23cm/9″
Our standard mixture consists of 75% hardwood to 25% softwood.
What is the ideal log size?
Wood is not a good conductor of heat so logs should be split to no more than 15cm diameter (preferably 10cm). Larger logs will take too much heat out of the core of the fire and cause inefficient burning.
The same thing happens when the stove is filled last thing at night and shut down. Temperatures will drop too low to burn the wood cleanly. The stove should only be shut down when the load is looking like red hot charcoal.
